History of SECBC

"St Edmund's alumnus Bernard Buckley (Law, 1968) was part of the first ever St Edmund's crew which took to the river, and kindly offered to give College the documents he held for our archives. After writing to David Cruttenden, the then President of Cambridge University Boat Club, on the 26th October 1969, Bernard was granted permission to put a boat on the river - and so St Edmund's Boat Club was born! To the visitor, the Bumps are certainly a spectacular event. Every 45 minutes a new set of boats paddle downstream past the Plough pub, line up, and then set off hell for leather one after the other. Some quickly catch up with another boat then stop (sometimes amid scenes of complete disorder) for others the chase goes on all the way down stream, unable to make up the last agonising inches. A few seem to have a gentle paddle over the course in glorious isolation. What is certain is that the Bumps are a Cambridge institution – completely crazy - but excellent fun."
